Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add VAT to my transaction?

Yes! But only at checkout. To add VAT, first, select your country in the upper-right corner of the payment screen (example), then click Enter VAT ID below the red price on the form. If you add VAT ID, you may also need add company name and address to the "Company (optional)."

I can't do VAT reverse charge after the transaction is complete, but FastSpring might be able to help you if you reach out to them within 90 days at [email protected].

Can I get an invoice for my purchase?

FastSpring issues EU-compliant VAT invoice for every transaction. You can download the invoice for your completed order from the FastSpring receipt email: look for “View Invoice” or “Manage Your Order” link at the bottom. You could also access your invoice on this page, using the email that you purchased Shottr with: https://shottr.onfastspring.com/account. The invoice will say RECEIPT at the top, but as far as I know, it is an EU-compliant VAT invoice. If you need further assistance with the documents related to your purchase, reach out at [email protected].

How do I freeze the screen?

Try taking a Fullscreen Capture and cropping it in-app (select+enter). The process is the same as with the Area Capture, but you do selection after the screenshot is taken. Generally, I recommend fullscreen over the area capture even when you don't need to freeze the screen: Shottr was specifically built around the fullscreen cropping workflow, and most of its features are optimized for it (https://shottr.cc/kb/precision)

The app tells me that Scrolling Capture is not supported on my computer

There’s a percentage of systems that don't work well with automatic capture (either due to OS configuration, or third party apps). I added the manual scrolling functionality as an alternative.

Please find the details on how to enable it here: Manual Scrolling Capture guide

Scrolling Capture produces a weird-looking image

If you're using an app that changes the way your scroll works (like MOS, Scroll Reverser, Smooze, etc), it may interfere with Shottr. Besides, Scrolling Capture doesn't work well with macOS Terminal, Visual Studio Code and Columns view in Finder (all three emulate scroll in a non-native way, the result is choppy). However, if you enable and use manual scrolling capture (see the item above), it should solve it.

I don’t want to see splash window when the app starts

Go to the app Settings → Advanced tab, and check the "Don't show splash" checkbox.

I want to hide the dock icon

Unfortunately, right now there’s no public way to turn the dock icon off. That being said, if you’re a Friends Club user, check the License tab in the app preferences, you might be able to leverage an experimental setting to hide it.

Window/Linux support

The Windows or Linux version doesn’t seem likely. Shottr relies on low-level macOS api to achieve maximum performance, its codebase is not portable. And besides, Shottr is a hobby project that I created primarily for myself, it would be difficult to justify development of this app for the platforms that I don’t use.

I want to enter filename or folder when I save my screenshot

You need to use Save As function (Cmd+Shift+S in both Editor and Thumbnail)

I don’t see the Upload button in my toolbar any more

That’s right, the Upload button was removed a while ago. Too few people were using it, and the toolbar was getting cluttered. Upload is still available through the preview thumbnail icon, the menu item, and with the hotkeys (try Cmd+E).

Support Other Languages

At this moment, I'm intentionally avoiding internalization because it would significantly slow down development and testing of the new features. However, if you strongly feel that I need to add new languages to the UI, please submit your request through this form: https://tally.so/r/3jbGXx

The app quits after a few seconds

This may happen if the other app forcefully closes Shottr. Do you have any apps that would quit other apps (Quitter, QuitAll, Swift Quit, or anything similar?) If you do, you may need to add Shottr to an exception list.

The app crashed on me

Oops! Sometimes the app just gets forcefully closed by third-party app. Do you have any apps that would quit other apps (Quitter, QuitAll, Swift Quit, or anything similar?) If you do, you may need to add Shottr to an exception list.

If there was a true crash, macOS should retain the crash report. Open the Console.app (Applications → Utilities → Console → Crash Reports), select the "Crash Reports" section on the left, and try to locate Shottr crash report there. If you do find it, I’d appreciate if you send it to me at [email protected] (either the .ips file, or just copy and paste the report text). If there’s no crash report, there’s a chance that the app works properly (is it still present in the menu bar?), or was terminated by the other apps on your computer.

I don’t have Shottr icon in my menu bar

The most frequent reason for this problem is if the icon is disabled in the app preferences (Preferences → Advanced → Hide menubar icon).

If that didn't help, you may try a few other things things:

  1. If you use, or have you ever used any app that manage icons in the menu bar (like HiddenBar, Vanilla, Dozer, BarTender or similar), this may be the culprit.
  2. It's possible that macOS hides icons after a certain threshold. If you're on a laptop, the icon could get behind the notch. Try moving a few visible menubar icons as far left as they would go (cmd+drag the icon to move it) and see if it will free up space for other icons to become visible (would the Shottr icon show up?).
  3. Try to reboot your computer in Safe Mode (you can do that by restarting the computer and holding Shift right after the chime during startup).

App autostart problem

MacOS has a confusing system of locking the app location in the autostart record when you first enable the autostart setting. If you launched the app directly from DMG, or from the Downloads folder, and enabled autostart from there, macOS will remember this location for future, even if you move the app to the Applications folder and try to re-enable the autostart setting from there.

Try going to System Settings → General → Login Items, then right clicking on the Shottr item, selecting the Show In Finder item and checking if the app is really present in that folder, and if the folder is macOS default “/Applications/” folder.

If not, you could fix the issue by deleting the app from the login items, and adding it back there manually using the "–" and "+" buttons:

If this doesn't help, there's also an article with a more comprehensive instruction:

macOS keep asking me for the recording permission for Shottr

MacOS ties permission to an instance of the app that was running when you first granted the permission. If you move the app after you gave it permission (for example, from /Downloads/ to /Applications/), the permissions will remain tied to the previous location, even if you grant the permission again. To manually clean up permissions, Quit the app, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, select Shottr item, then click "–" icon underneath to remove the faulty record. After that, click "+" icon and add the instance of Shottr.app that you're normally running (it's best to use the instance sitting in the /Applications/ folder). To make it work reliably going forward, it's best to remove other instances of the app from the disk completely (see more info: https://shottr.cc/kb/instancesconflict).

I downloaded Shottr, but macOS says the disk image is corrupted

You're probably trying to install the app on an unsupported macOS version. Shottr runs on macOS Catalina (10.15) and up.

Window Capture wallpaper background doesn’t work on macOS Sonoma

This problem is related to the animated wallpapers introduced in macOS Sonoma, it was fixed in v1.7.2: Update to a new version

I opened DMG and installed the app, but macOS says the app can't be launched, or that the file is corrupted

If you send/receive a .DMG or an .APP through Telegram/Slack/Teams or similar channels, macOS may mark the file with a quarantine attribute. On launch, if the quarantine flag is present, macOS often shows the misleading “damaged/corrupted” error, even though the bits are fine. Try opening Terminal, type in xattr -l , add Space, then drag-and-drop the App on the Terminal window to insert its path, and hit Enter. If you see a line starting with com.apple.quarantine, that's the problem. To remove the quarantine attribute, type in the Terminal xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine , add Space, drag-and-drop the app on the Terminal window, and hit Enter.
